CNC Milling Definition

CNC milling refers to computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling. It is milling process which takes place on CNC milling machine. And CNC milling machine is the ordinary milling machine integrated with a numerical control system. We can use it to perform more precision milling under the control of program code. During CNC milling, the cutter is able to move along multiple axis, and can create a variety of shapes, slots, and holes, which were previously unattainable through the traditional manual milling process.  In addition, the workpiece is often moved across the milling tool in different directions, unlike the single axis motion of a drill.

Application of CNC Milling

CNC milling mainly includes plane milling and contour milling. It is mainly used for processing a variety of complex plane, curve surfaces and shell parts, such as various types of cam, mold, connecting rod, blade, propeller, box parts, etc..CNC milling is mainly suitable for machining the following parts:

Parts with a plane surface, straight line curved surface.and stereoscopic surface.

CNC Milling Machine

CNC milling machine is a powerful CNC machine. It is one kind of computer numerical control equipment developed on the basis of the general milling machine. The processing technology is basically the same and the structure is similar.

There are CNC milling machines with tool magazine and no tool magazine. We often call the one with tool magazine is machining center. There are 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis machining center, etc.. Except for milling process, CNC Milling Machine also can carry out drilling, reaming, threading, boring such kind of sub-machining processes.

How Does CNC Milling Work?

CNC milling process is not that different from traditional milling, it also involves the cutting tool, spindle, chuck, the only thing different is that there is a computer interface equips with CNC milling machine. The function of each portion is as below:

Spindle: Rotates the chuck across multiple axes.

Chuck: Locks your material in place for machining.

Interface: Reads computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files and controls the milling machine with operator input.

Advantages of CNC Milling
  • Can make Complex parts with the versatile milling tools.
  • High productivity, a large scale of machining application.
  • High precision on milling parts.
  • Multi machining processes on one fixture.
